al di là del silenzio di anni le spalle
voltare gli sguardi interrotti; spenti
e dispersi i richiami ad infrasuoni,
scavalcando montagne a perdersi altrove;
ribadita la separatezza, ed usata la vita
a mascella d’asino per dire ciò
che andava detto
- senza ovviamente perdere di vista
ciò che ci avrebbe spezzato la chiglia;
dopo indefessi esercizi di senso privato
e pubblico possesso di sé:
in tutto questo tempo mai alcun dubbio
che tu mi abbia meno che capito.
beyond the years of silence the backs
turned the broken glances; dead
and dispersed the infrasound calls,
passing over mountains and out of sight;
the apartness reinforced, the life used
jawbone of an ass-style to say
what had to be said
- while never, of course, losing sight
of that which was to shatter our keel;
after tireless exercises of private sense
and public self-possession:
in all this time never a single doubt
that you had me less than figured out.

what does it mean to love oneself:
nothing, I used to think years ago, to love is
fight for our own side, and want is
always to want for oneself. and it’s like this
really, that on becoming adult one starts
to care for oneself:
in disgust of oneself, there is no
side to be on, and so begins
the love for oneself
for staying together, like when it’s Christmas.

le mie, le tue traiettorie faticano
a non intersecarsi e ci scherziamo.
ci basta così poco a illuminarci:
un abbeveratoio
my trajectors and yours struggle
not to intersect and we laugh about it.
it takes so little to make us glow:
a water trough.
