Night is falling
Richard falls onto his knees
His corduroy jacket soaked
by the unexpected rain
on this springtime day -
the day of their anniversary.
Two years it’s been
since he’d presented her
with that ring
that commitment
on his knees, he was -
then, too...
The white sheet of paper
contaminated by words
he does not
does not want
to assimiliate.
’...I cannot wait any longer...’
’...you never feel like talking...’
So different
these words
from the first words
they’d exchanged
in never ending poems -
their way
of communication
then...
Pages and pages of poems
not about love
not always -
about disclosing their souls
which made them fall in love
spiritually - above all.
Sounds - spoken words
is what she’d wanted now
not written words -
he wasn’t ready for that
perhaps never would be...
not even her love
could change that.
His glance fell upon the small
wooden, ancient bookshelf
cramped with their poems
read, over and over again -
some too painful to read...
Not sure how long
he’d stared at them
his whole life it seemed
instead
it was just all night.
When he left the house
their home
with that bookshelf under his arm
wondering around the streets and alleys
oblivious of the stares
oblivious of the pages
one by one
falling unto the ground
being carried by the wind
oblivious of the miles he’d walked
oblivious of his whereabouts...
